THEME: "Crossing the Delaware". Describe Washington and his troops crossing the Delaware. It can focus on the overall event or a portion of the event (such as preparation for the crossing, the crossing itself, or the battle that followed).

THEME WRITING:
TW-1): Sound Effect Poem (K-6th Individual): Poem line count: Limit to 35 lines.
TW-2): To the Tune of . . . (K-6th Individual): Written to the tune of "Row, Row, Row Your Boat,"
TW-3): To the Tune of . . . (K-6th Group - Up to 4 per group): See description for TW-2.
TW-4): Essay (3rd-6th Individual): Essay word count: Limit to 300 words.

THEME ART:
TA-1) Theme Scene: Crossing the Delaware (K-6th Individual):
Any medium including but not limited to oils, watercolor, oil crayons, charcoal, etc. Size not to exceed a horizontal 22"x18".

THEME COMBINING WRITING AND ART:
TC-1) Shoebox Float - (K-6th Individual):
Create a miniature float, constructed out of a shoebox. Maximum size is 10"x16".
TC-2) Shoe Box Float - (K-6th Group): See description for TC-1.
TC-3) Graphic Story Board - (3rd-6th Individual): Based on the comic strip panel style, illustrate the "Crossing of the Delaware." On white paper, horizontal, size not to exceed 8 ½"x11".
TC-4a) Game Board - (3rd-6th Individual): Using the Monopoly board game style and size, create a board game about the Crossing of the Delaware. Create at least four pieces to move around the board, a minimum of 24 cards, and the box/bag to store the game.

Describe or illustrate local history, a historical event or place (other than "Crossing the Delaware"), or a monument (can include national parks) dedicated to George Washington.

WRITING:

Select a well-known song, folk song or nursery rhyme. Rewrite the lyrics. Length not more than three verses. (Resources: Books by Alan Katz, Take Me Out of the Bathtub and Other Silly Dilly Songs, and I'm Still Here in the Bathtub and Other Silly Dilly Songs.

W-3) Essay (3rd-6th Individual): "Who Is Your Modern Day George Washington and Why?" Essay word count: Limit to 300 words.

ART:
A-2) 3-D Portrait of George Washington (K-6th Individual):
The attaching of small items, cut paper, fabric, etc. to create an original or adapt an existing portrait of George Washington. (Resource: Resource: What Presidents Are Made Of, by Hanoch Piven.) Size not to exceed 18"x18".
A-3) Postage Stamp Illustrating a 'Monument' (K-6th Individual): Design a stamp, with a scallop cut out border, illustrating a 'monument' dedicated to honoring George Washington. Any medium including but not limited to: oils, watercolor, oil crayons, charcoal, etc. Size not to exceed 18"x18".
A-4) Local History - (K-6th Individual): Illustrate a young George Washington surveying in what will become Rappahannock County. Size not to exceed 18x18".
A-5a) Measure Up To George: Life Size (K-6th Group): Create a life-size image of George Washington. It can be on a flat long piece of banner paper or oil canvas that can be rolled up. It can be made of cardboard that when unfolded can stand up. It can also be a 3-D freestanding figure. Keep in mind you are designing a Life Size that real people will pose next to for pictures. (While adults should supervise and advise, the majority of the design and construction of any Life Size entry must be that of the students.)

A-6) Computer Generated Portrait of George Washington (3rd-6th Individual): Size not to exceed 18"x18".

COMBINING WRITING AND ART:
C-1) Shoebox Float - (K-6th Individual):

C-2) Shoe Box Float - (K-6th Group - Up to 4 per group): See description for C-1.
C-3) Graphic Story Board - (3rd-6th Individual): Based on the comic strip panel style, illustrate, a historical event, the building of a monument involving George Washington. On white paper, horizontal, size not to exceed 8 ½"x11".
C-4a) Game Board - (3rd-6th Individual): Using a game-board style and size (such as Candy Land, Monopoly), create a board game about George Washington. Create at least four pieces to move around the board, a minimum of 24 cards, and the box/bag to store the game.
C-4b) Game Board - (3rd-6th Group - Up to 4 per group): See description for C-4a.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL ENTRIES

  • Each entry must comply with all the following requirements or risk being disqualified:
  • All entries must be nonfiction and be based on documented facts and include two bibliographical references. (See Bibliography below.)
  • Each entry must be the original work of the individual or group. Adults may supervise, but all work shall be that of the student(s).

BIBLIOGRAPHY
A bibliography must be noted on the entry form for all entries. At least two (not more than four) of the following types of sources must be cited. Only one source can be from the Internet. The following information to be included with each type of reference is:

  • Book References: Author, Title, Publisher, Year published, Pages used.
  • Magazine/Journal References: Author, Title of article, Magazine/Journal, Volume, Number, Date published, Pages used.
  • Oral History/Interview: Name of person interviewed (can be the person you are writing about, a teacher or librarian assisting with your project, representative of a historical society, an authority on the subject you are researching, etc.); Date of interview; Relationship of interviewee to historical event or era.
  • Internet Reference: Author or Publisher, Title, Web site address (complete if not on home page), Date of message, document or download.

FORMAT FOR WRITING ENTRIES

  • For writing entries, use plain white paper, 8 ½”x11”.
  • Set one-inch margin on all sides.
  • Hand print, Type OR Computer print in Times, Times Roman, OR Comic Sans.
  • Title of entry at top of each page.
  • No mention of contestant’s name within the composition. Can print name on the backside of the last page.
  • Poems and songs: Single space.
  • Poem line count: Not more than 35 lines.
  • Song (number of verses): Not more that three verses.
  • Essays: Double space.
  • Essay word count: Limit to 300 words.
  • Proof read for grammar, spelling and punctuation.
  • Paper clip Entry Form to the written entry. DO NOT STAPLE.
  • At the “Show,” entries will be mounted on background paper for display.

FOR PHOTOGRAPHS

  • Identify the photographer (can be an adults)
  • Identify all in the photo.
  • Bibliography does not apply unless recreating an historical event.

ATTACH AN ENTRY FORM for each entry. (Paper clip, DO NOT STAPLE to entry.)

  • Title of Entry.
  • Grade.
  • Category.
  • Name & Age of contestant(s). (If a group, list in alphabetical order with their age).
  • Bibliography: minimum of two references as noted above.

JUDGING

Writing

  • Historical accuracy.
  • Understanding of the historical context surrounding the event, era, or person(s) discussed in the entry.
  • Clarity and coherence.
  • Creativity and imagination in the choice of subject and presentation.
  • Grammar, spelling, and compositional structure.

Art

  • Historical accuracy.
  • Expressing historical context surrounding the event, era or persons illustrated in the entry.
  • Originality.
  • Creativity and imagination in the choice of subject and presentation.
  • Color, texture, and composition.

HONORS

  • All participants will receive Participant Ribbons.
  • Judges will award first, second, and third place ribbons in each of the Categories (Writing, Art, and Combined) within each of the Sections (Individual, Group, and Group Family).
  • Judges’ Choices ribbons will also be awarded to five overall entries, in both the Writing and Art categories (for a total of 10 Judges’ Choices) [Combined Writing and Art categories may be considered for either a Writing or Art Judges Choice Award. Judges Choices will be awarded for: Outstanding Action, Historical Event, Humor, Research/Detail, and Virginia/Local History.
  • If a Category ribbon or Judges’ Choice is awarded to a group entry, all members of that group will receive ribbons.
  • Results will be posted on www.rappahannocklibrary.org. Selected writings and art will also be exhibited online.
