THE BADGE OF MILITARY MERIT /
THE PURPLE HEART

Purple Heart

George Washington's creation of the purple military badge, in 1782, becomes the first decoration to honor the enlisted men and noncommissioned officers.

On the 200th anniversary of Washington's birth in 1932, the badge is reintroduced as the Purple Heart.
